Because of its size and weight, mattresses can be difficult to clean. Other than this, the intricate materials and expensive linen that make-up a mattress also require extra care in cleaning. Therefore, there are many things to consider when cleaning a mattress.

Is there really a need for mattresses to be kept neat and tidy all the time? Why should people spent their efforts, time and money just to have their mattresses clean?

It is for the simple reason that people spent an average of eight hours on their bed with the mattresses. Having a clean and comfortable mattress will not just make someone earn a sound sleep, but will also assure the individual with the proper sanitation and healthy living (and sleeping).

1. To keep the mattress always clean and free from germs, use a mattress protector. It is a piece of cloth or linen that covers the mattress. A mattress protector should always be in good quality and condition, enough to protect the mattress from further stains brought by liquid spills and body fluids. It should also be regularly washed to thwart off dusts that have stuck onto it; thus, preventing dusts from sipping into the mattress. 2. Another way how to clean a mattress is through the use of vacuum. By using the vacuum upholstery attachment, clean all sides of the mattress to ensure that no dust mites inhabit the mattress. Dust mites are arachnids that can stick onto the bed mattress and are great contributors of indoor pollution. It can cause asthma, skin irritation and itchiness to someone who is lying on a mattress that is encroached by it. Because of these dust mites, mattresses should be cleaned as needed.

3. Lemon juice is one of the most popular homemade agent for cleaning a mattress. One can use a lemon cleaner found in supermarket, or just simply mixing a half cup of lemon juice with cold water. Using a sponge or clean cloth, blot the lemon juice to the stained area. Do not rub harshly or widely the cloth to prevent the stain from spreading more in the mattress. The sweet scent of lemon is also taken by some people as another plus point in how to clean a mattress using lemons. This is very effective most especially to stains caused by urine.

4. Another way how to clean a mattress is through the use of mattress cleaner solution sold among supermarket, hardware or furniture store. There is a wide array of choices on solutions that are known to be effective in cleaning mattress. People should avoid drinking (especially wine, beer, and other alcoholic drinks) on their beds because this will increase the chances of liquid spills, which will lead to stains and bad smell of the mattress. Also, smoking is being discouraged to be done inside the bedroom because the smell of cigar will surely cling into the mattress, giving it a "cigarette smell.

Are you one of those rare individuals who think out side of the box? If so then chances are you have probably wondered about Christmas. What was it like? How did it come about? Whos bright idea was it anyway?

There is no way humanly possible that I would be able to tell the entire history of Christmas in a single article. I will however share a few facts with you that are guaranteed to make you go Hmmmm. Lets take a little trip to what I like to call Christmas past. We will travel all the way back to the early 17th century. Im talking about a time when a wave of religious change, the holiday known, as Christmas would be forever changed in the land of Europe. When a guy by the name of Oliver Cromwell and his puritan followers invaded England in 1645, they vowed to rid England of decadence, which lead to the cancellation of Christmas. Eventually Charles II was restored to the throne, so was Christmas.

The group of pilgrims, English separatists that came to America in 1620, were even more orthodox in their Puritan beliefs than Cromwell. This meant that Christmas was not a holiday in the early days of America. In fact from 1659 to 1681, the act of celebrating Christmas was actually illegal in Boston. If you were caught celebrating the Christmas holiday in any way shape or form you were fined five shillings. In contrast, during the Jamestown settlement, a guy by the name Captain John Smith reported that Christmas was enjoyed by all and passed without incident.

As I sit here writing this article I cannot help but let my mind wonder a bit. I keep imagining living in a time where leaders who refused to celebrate Christmas controlled you. Did you know that with a stroke of a pen Christmas could be canceled again?

Sorry for the rant! I may have digressed a little. Anyway all of the nonsense continued until after the American Revolution when English customs began to fade. Hold on to your seat Congress was actually in session on December 25, 1789, which was the first Christmas under Americas new constitution. The fact of the matter is Christmas wasnt declared a federal holiday until June 26, 1870.

Considering Rotary & Oscillating Hooks

Sewing machine repair is an exciting and satisfying career , but it is also a great hobby or business. While, repairing sewing machines is not for everyone, it can be lots of fun.

When you decide to learn about sewing machine repair, there is a lot to learn. One of those things is understanding sewing machine hook systems.

When you look at a sewing machine, one of the first things you need to identify is if the machine has an oscillating or a rotary hook assembly. They do much the same task on your sewing machine, but they do it very differently.

The Rotary Hook Assembly includes a hook that moves in a complete circle round and round. The hook slides behind the needle, and proceeds all the way around the bobbin carrier until it again slides behind the bobbin carrier. Singer sewing machines revolutionized the sewing world with their drop in rotary hook systems.

When you look at a sewing machine, look for where the bobbin is inserted into the sewing machine. If the bobbin is a top loading bobbin (one placed just below the needle plate and a slight bit in front of it), it is usually a rotary hook.

Both the front loading and side loading machines can have either hook system. A good example of the side loading machine is the popular Singer Featherweight. Bernina is famous for their front loading CB oscillating hook system, but they also produce front loading rotary systems.

It is easy to tell the difference. Rotary hooks rotate around the bobbin carrier in a continuous circle again and again. Oscillating hooks move to half way around and then go back to start again. The go back and forth " back and forth.

If you have any question, answer this. Does the hook move back and forth (Oscillating Hook) or in a complete circle (Rotary Hook)?

An oscillating hook starts out with its point up and just to the left of the needle as the needle moves down. When the needle starts up again, the hook slides behind the needle to pick up the thread from the needle. The scarf is a cut out area of the needle just above the eye which helps the thread form a loop making it easy for the point of the hook to grab the thread. The needle continues moving up while the point of hook continues moving in a half circle to the bottom. At the bottom the thread slides off the hook, and the hook makes its swing back to its starting point for the next stitch.

Both systems do essentially the same thing. As the point of the hook passes behind the needle, it is positioned slightly higher than the eye of the needle. The upward travel of the needle causes a small loop of thread to form on the back side of the needle above the eye and amplified by a space called the scarf which is cut out above the eye. The point of the hook snags the thread from behind the needle and pulls it around the bobbin thread. As the needle rises, the threads are tightened into a lockstitch.

In both cases, the action of the hook must precisely synchronize with the needle. Even slight variations cause problems. This synchronization is known as hook-needle timing. If you see skipped stitches, bad stitches, or none, check the hook-needle timing.

Adjusting the hook-needle timing is a very common adjustment. If the user breaks a needle, sews on excessively thick material, or debris builds up in the gears; the timing often gets jolted out of adjustment. The specifics of making this adjustment vary considerably from one model to another. Some adjust on gears located directly below the hook. Some adjust at the side or at the end of the lower shaft. Some use timing belts. The essential adjustment is always the same, however, in that the point of the needle must reach the scarf at precisely the right time and in the right way. Check the specific service manual for details on adjusting the hook-needle timing until you gain enough experience and knowledge to adjust it on the fly.

Thrombosed hemorrhoids are amongst the most severe forms of hemorrhoids. A thrombosed hemorrhoid is a hemorrhoid in which the vein has clotted. Although thrombosed hemorrhoids are normally very painful they do not generally require surgical removal. The can occur inside the anal canal or as external hemorrhoids and they vary in size from being very small (the size of a pea) through to being as large as a golf ball in the most extreme cases.

Natural hemorrhoid cures can be great pain relievers and they can be very effective in total treatment of thrombosed hemorrhoids. Below are several tips for sufferers of thrombosed hemorrhoids:

Use warm baths to ease the pain and reduce the swelling of hemorrhoids. At least 2 bathes per day in warm water are recommended. If you can sit down thats great " if this causes you too much pain however; squatting is fine.

One of the most painful things for hemorrhoid sufferers is to pass a stool. You can make this a lot easier by making the stool softer which can be done by increasing your daily fiber intake. That means eating more fruits, cereals, and vegetables.

Avoid dehydration. Stay hydrated by drinking a minimum of 7 glasses of water daily. This is not difficult - you should aim for 10 glasses to ensure hydration. Try drinking 2 glasses immediately when you wake up in the morning, 2 more at morning tea time and lunch time, 2 at dinner time and 2 before going to bed. Its always better to sip the water than drink it quickly.

Apply ice to the anal opening (or affected area). This will reduce the blood flow to the area and will also numb the thrombosed hemorrhoid. Wrap ice in a cloth to apply.

Try a hemorrhoid cream or gel. These aim to reduce swelling and irritation " they seem to work with varying results however so choose one carefully if you decide you want to try one.

As a very temporary solution to excruciating pain " Ibuprofen can be very effective.

Increase your rate of metabolism by walking for 20 minutes a day. This is probably best done after having a sitz bath or when you feel the least pain.

When cleaning your anus after bowel movement, use a soft towel or extra soft toilet paper to minimize irritation.

What Is It?

Considerations For Altering Sleeves

A friend of mine called the other day and told me that she had just bought a new blouse. The only problem was that it had long sleeves. I told her to shorten the sleeve, but she was worried she might make a mistake and ruin the blouse.

We live in Texas where it commonly reaches a hundred degrees during the summer. Long sleeved shirts are just too hot to wear. So one day, my husband and I decided we would just shorten a bunch of his long sleeved shirts. It is just like having brand new shirts.

Long sleeves can easily be shortened or made into short sleeves. Indeed, you can alter the length of a sleeve almost at will. This is until you have already cut off part of the sleeve. The goal is to alter the sleeve correctly.

Altering a blouse or shirt sleeve is a project that can be quick and easy. Yes, there are probably a hundred different variations on how to do it. Cuff or no cuff, sleeveless, short sleeve, three quarter sleeve, fancy or simple. There are a bunch of choices, but for this project we decided to keep it simple.

Initially, identify how long you want the sleeve to be. Since you have many options, you must decide. If it is helpful compare other shirts you have until you get a good idea what you really want.

Second, Measure both under- arm seam and at the shoulder. Add 1 " to this measurement, and mark the fabric with a fabric marker.

Next, cut from one measurement to the other. This should be a straight even cut.

Fourth, Since the sleeve shape tapers, you will need to take out the stitching almost to the underarm seam. Reshape the under arm (sleeve). Sew a seam on the inside of the sleeve to hold that taper in place.

The inch and a half of fabric to be used for the hem, must be cut and sewn with an angle opposite to accommodate the taper so that when it is folded under it will not bind.

Step Five, complete the hem. Look at the blouse. Do you see any top stitching? If so, you may simply fold the fabric under and top stitch. Otherwise, you will need to install a blind hem. Turn half an inch under and press with your iron. Fold another one inch and press again. Sew.

If you plan to use a blind hem, you can accomplish your sewing using you sewing machine blind hem stitch with its appropriate blind hem foot. Or if you plan to do many hems, there is a great specialty machine called a blind hemmer that produced a professional blind hem perfect for sleeves, slacks, dresses, skirts, wherever you may need a blind hem.
